Filled with an array of eclectic, global restaurants, plus a range of hip boutiques and home decor shops, residential Webster Groves has been recognized as one of Missouri’s best places to live, work and raise a family.
The city features an enclave of tree-lined streets and historic homes and is well known for its long-standing foundation in the arts, with cultural anchors such as The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, The Community Music School and Webster University contained within its borders.
This inner-ring St. Louis suburb boasts a population of about 25,000 residents and is considered one of the more affluent communities in Missouri. In 2008, the area was ranked ninth in Family Circle Magazine's list of the "10 Best Cities for Families in America.” More than 300 of the community’s homes are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Located just 15 minutes from downtown St. Louis, the neighborhood includes attractions like the 1857 Hawken House, which was built by inventors of the rifle that mountain men and explorers took to the western frontier.

Local favorites include: Olive + Oak, offering creative American classics and cocktails; The Block, a restaurant and butcher shop featuring a farm-fresh, seasonal menu that sources the very best local ingredients; Serendipity Ice Cream, a locally owned, friendly neighborhood ice cream shop; and Robust Wine Bar, featuring a menu full of cheese, charcuterie and eclectic entrees paired with wine and cocktails in a sophisticated space.
Things to Do
Residents of this area also frequent Memorial Park located at South Elm Avenue and East Glendale Road. Popular features include the City's Recreation Complex with Ice Arena, Aquatic Center, Fitness Center, and Action Park, as well as baseball fields, soccer fields, and tennis courts. Several Community Days, including the annual Fourth of July celebration, take place here.
The Frederick S. Plant Wildlife Sanctuary, which spans three acres, is also located in Webster Groves.
The Hawken House Museum is the area’s most visited attraction. Built as the home for Christopher and Mary Ann Hawken (Hawkins), the post-war “Federalist Style” brick structure now preserves the artifacts and the stories of the Hawken family’s era. The family is credited with creating the coveted Hawken Rifle, well known as the “gun that settled the west,” since it was prized by so many famous westward explorers and trappers, including Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, Kit Carson, John Fremont, Jim Bridger, and Robert Campbell, the famous St. Louis fur trader.
Schools
The Webster Groves School District, a public school district, serves the community of Webster Groves. The district has six elementary schools, Hixson Middle School, Steger Sixth Grade Center and the Webster Groves High School. Several private schools are also located in Webster Groves. Noted institutions include:
- Webster University, a private university with multiple branch locations across the United States and countries across Europe, Asia, and Africa.
- The Waldorf School of St. Louis, offering education for children in Early Childhood through Middle School.
